Who Is Melanie Christol?
Melanie Cristol is the Founder & CEO of Brazen Goods and the inventor of the company’s patented product, Lorals. Prior to creating Lorals, Melanie graduated from Columbia Law School. She then litigated healthcare, consumer-products, and civil-rights cases in California, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, and the United States Supreme Court. Yes, she’s a badass.

What Are Lorals?
Lorals are ultra-thin elastomeric underwear that create a fluid-impermeable barrier during intimate activity. Designed in consultation with fashion industry experts to look like silky lingerie, people use Lorals for multiple reasons: to have more oral sex on their periods, to avoid chafing of their partner’s facial hair, to enjoy rimming without worry, and to feel more comfortable with a partner getting up-close-and-personal.

What about safe sex? That is, if I use Lorals, can I limit the risk of receiving unprotected oral?
STD Rates Continue to Rise
According to the latest data available from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), STD rates in the U.S. reached a new high in 2019 for the sixth straight year. Early data from 2020 suggest the trends are ongoing.
There are many sexually transmitted infections (STIs) that can be spread through oral sex. The CDC tells us that, to prevent STI / STD transmission during oral sex, “[Y]ou can lower your chances of giving or getting STDs during oral sex by using a condom, dental dam or other barrier method every time you have oral sex.”
What are those “other barrier methods”?
Reducing The Risk of Receiving Unprotected Oral
Lorals are silky panties made out of condom-grade latex that’s extremely thin. That allows the wearer to feel all of the sensations they are seeking – a wearable oral / dental dam, if you will. (For any of you that aren’t familiar with them, oral / dental dams are rectangular-shaped pieces of latex that are used to protect against direct mouth-to-genital or mouth-to-anus contact during oral sex).
Lorals aren’t yet an FDA-approved Class II type of “barrier method.” For now they’re marketed as “Latex Panties for Pleasure and Comfort,” but we look forward to the day when approval is granted and they may claim that “using Lorals the right way will reduce or limit the risk of transmitting STI’s” — and with it, another way for women to feel empowered to take charge of their sexual health.
Check ’em out. Lorals are available at mylorals.com and at retail stores (including Urban Outfitters).
